PROJECT 3
what was this project?
This was my third project at DV8, we had to buy clothing from a charity shop and rework or re style them, to produce a new garment or outfit. we then had to do a photo shoot to model our garment whilst experimenting with a range of photography and editing techniques.
what did you choose to make for this project and why?
I chose to create a pair of mismatch jeans, plain black on one side and black & white striped on the other. i wanted to create a punk/grunge themed photo shoot and this included the clothing, photography techniques and location.
what techniques & software did you choose to use and why?
when i was taking my photos i used these techniques:
-
framing
-
rule of thirds
-
different apertures - to change whether i wanted the background, foreground and subject matter in focus, or if i wanted the foreground blurred and the subject matter in focus for emphasis.
when i was editing i used the software Adobe Lightroom and used these tools:
-
vignette
-
contrast
-
sharpness
-
black & white filters
how did you create your garment?
To create my garment i used two different pairs of jeans, i unpicked the middle of them to separate the legs of each pairs and took off the waistband and pockets. next i measured each leg from different points to check they were equal, which they weren't so i cut of the excess fabric. then i sewed together the right and left leg up to where the zip needed to be re inserted, i then measured to check i had the right length zip and sewed it into place and re sewed the waistband onto my newly created jeans. the last step was to add the final touches, i stitched the pockets back onto the opposing patterned leg and added cuffs to match the pockets.
i decided to create another pair with the other legs and excess fabric but these were designed to be high waisted which caused more problems then the previous pair. i had to put a facing on this pair rather then adding a bigger waistband. but the rest of the steps were exactly the same.
what was photography equipment did you use?
I do photography outside of college and studied it at GCSE so i have a lot of gear, for this project i used my Canon 1200D and my Polaroid supercolour 635cl, i wanted to have the contrast of analogue and digital photography as i love using film cameras and Polaroids and wish they were more commonly used. I have had my Canon for over 5 years, it is really reliable, works with all of my different lenses and takes amazing photos.
what locations did you choose for the photo shoot and why?
I chose 2 different locations to link with my punk/grunge theme.
My first location was the Balcome Viaducts/Ouse Valley and my second was Newhaven specifically the beach and railway. i chose the viaducts because of the prominence of the bricks and shape of the viaducts, it created a beautiful backdrop and framed my subject matter. i chose Newhaven because of the amount of derelict and rundown buildings that are still there. they provided an incredible link to the punk/grunge theme as they are unwanted, rejected and on the outskirts of normal society which was the same as the punk revolution and those involved, and one of my photographers documented growing up as a skinhead, the buildings and places in my photos looked a lot like some of the ones in his.
was there anything else included in this project you haven't spoken about?
All of our projects are broken down into different criteria, which are a mix of sketchbook and research work and practical work. In this project we had to:
1. Research - investigate both colour and black & white fashion photography
2. Garment selection & creation - Go to different charity shops and find clothing to rework for this project and start creating.
3. Exploring Photography Techniques - Research different photography techniques and start experimenting with them.
4. Photo shoot - Go and take your photos ready to create your final product
5. Editing - edit your photos and choose 5 favourites to present.
what was your favourite part of this project?
My favourite part of this project was the photo shoot i love photography so much and it was really fun day, Karl who modelled for me had never done a photo shoot before and he did really well. This project made me realise the strength of my love for photography and how passionate i am about it.
